Website Relaunch

Nobody has touched your website in years, it is barely readable on a phone, and no one quite knows what still depends on it. I rebuild it, redirect every old URL with a 301 and make sure your email addresses keep working through the move. After that, the only running cost is the domain.

001 / Deliverables

Four things you walk away with.

The new site is the centrepiece. What sets a relaunch apart from a new website is in the other three.

01

The new website

Responsive, static and fast, with Lighthouse 98 on mobile and 100 on desktop in the reference project. No CMS, no database, no plugins: there is nothing that needs updates, and scans for WordPress logins come up empty.

02

Redirect list

Every old URL, including those from the web archive, with its target on the new site and a 301 redirect. Bookmarks and links from other sites still lead to the right page instead of an error page. 5 out of 5 in the reference project, checked live.

03

Mail and domain inventory

In one relaunch, the info@ address that key accounts had been writing to for years ran on an old server of the former agency. Cancelling that server would have shut the address down. So before every move I record all domains, mail records (MX) and mailboxes, including on servers nobody keeps track of any more.

04

Before-and-after measurement

PageSpeed and Lighthouse before the old site is switched off and again afterwards, with dates. If you only measure after the move, you have no "before" value left.

002 / How it runs

How a relaunch runs

  1. 01

    Inventory

All pages and URLs of the old website, including those in the web archive, plus domains, DNS and every email address tied to the old server. And a measurement while the old site is still running. One to two business days.

  2. 02

    Drafts

Design variants to choose from before anything is built out. In the reference project four variants were ready after one afternoon.

  3. 03

    Build

Pages, content, form and the building blocks you chose, on a preview that search engines do not index. You sign off before the move.

  4. 04

    Move and check

Domain switched over, every redirect checked live, email tested, second measurement. Then handover with documentation and all access credentials.

003 / Price

A fixed price from building blocks

€1,900 covers the relaunch of a website with up to five pages in one language: inventory, new site, transfer of the content and a redirect for every old URL. SEO, bot protection, a second language and hosting are added in the calculator below.

More pages, a shop, appointment booking or a lot of content to transfer raise the price. The figure is fixed after a short discovery call, before you sign, not afterwards.

Relaunch package

from €1,900 net

Up to five pages, one language, content from the old site.

  • Inventory: pages, URLs, domains, email
  • 301 redirect for every old URL
  • New site: responsive, static, no plugins
  • Contact form delivered to your inbox
  • Before-and-after measurement, handover with documentation

Running costs: just the domain

Hosting, HTTPS and the form run on Cloudflare's free plan or on your existing server. No hosting subscription, no licences. You cancel the old hosting contract once the inventory shows that nothing depends on it any more.

005 / Frequent questions

What you probably want to know

Will the relaunch cost us our Google rankings?

Not through dead links: every old URL gets a 301 redirect to the matching new page, and I check the list live after the move. A few weeks of fluctuation are normal with any move, which is why I measure beforehand and check redirects and error pages afterwards.

Will our email addresses keep working through the move?

This is the part that is easiest to overlook. Before the move I record all mail records (MX) and mailboxes, including on old servers. In the reference project the most important address ran on an agency server and was switched to a free forward into the existing mailbox.

What does the site cost to run?

Just the domain. Hosting, the HTTPS certificate, the form and email forwarding run on Cloudflare's free plan: static pages without a limit, the form up to 100,000 requests a day. In the reference project that comes to €13.95 a year for three domains. With self-hosting the site runs on your existing server, and nothing is added there either.

How long does a relaunch take?

In the reference project the new site was live on the domain three days after the first draft, and most of the work was done after a week. After that, the pace usually depends on copy and sign-offs. Plan for two to four weeks until launch.

Can we change content ourselves afterwards?

Not in the browser, the site comes without a CMS. That is exactly why it needs no updates. You send changes by email and get a fixed price up front, larger ones run at a day rate. If you want to edit copy yourself every week, a CMS is the better choice, and I will tell you so in the discovery call.

Who writes the legal notice and privacy policy?

You do, with a generator or a lawyer's help. Writing legal texts is legal advice, which I do not provide. I supply the technical details, meaning which services, cookies and storage the site uses, and build the texts in.
